Description:
|
In 2007 the University of Cincinnati was one of 20 colleges and universities from around the world participating in the U.S. Department of Energy's third Solar Decathlon competition in Washington D.C. UC's entry, the Solar House was designed and constructed over a two year period. Students and Faculty from four of UC's colleges contributed to the design, technology, financing, construction, and marketing of the project: College of Business, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. It is an 800 square foot house designed to be powered strictly by energy from the sun. This energy was harnessed by two different methods.Photovoltaic cells mounted on the roof provided energy for electric loads, while a south facing patio fence made up of evacuated tubes provided hot water to be used for space heating, cooling, and domestic water heating. The design was driven by a desire for modularity and flexibility and did this through the use of recycled and reclaimed materials.
