Description:
|
"General William Henry Harrison looms over Piatt Park's western end. Harrison was the United States's ninth president and the first from Ohio. Dedicated in 1896, this equestrian statue is the work of Louis T. Rebisso (1837-1899). Italian-born but resident in Cincinnati, Rebisso is best known for his equestrian statues of General McPherson in McPherson Square, Washington, and of General Grant in Chicago's Lincoln Park. He captures Harrison in his military days and renders him younger, more vigorous than when he assumed the presidency. That his horse has one foot raised indicated that Harrison was wounded in battle. Vandals have thrice stolen his sword. Equestrians have long delighted in pointing out that the sculptor neglected to provide the general with a saddle." (45)
