Description:
|
"...The Hyatt-Regency Hotel/Saks Fifth Avenue complex, 151 West Fifth Street, which opened in March 1984. Twenty years earlier, city planners had designed this site for a luxury hotel, but it was not until 1973 that Hyatt made a concrete proposal to establish a hotel here. The plans died a year later for lack of financing, but in 1981, the city revived the project by raising $21 million in local funds and winning a $6 million federal Urban Development Action Grant. The 22-story building was designed by RTKL, the firm that put together the 1964 downtown redevelopment plan. The architects created a red brick building with a rounded side toward the river,an angular wedge facing the city, and a solarium tucked between its wings. The hotel has 484 rooms, two restaurants, two lounges, a pool, a sauna and numerous banquet and meeting rooms. A Saks Fifth Avenue department store is also part of the complex."
