Description:
|
St. Rose of Lima was initially built for a German-speaking congregation. In May of 1869, the Romanesque church was completed in Fulton on 2501 Eastern Avenue in Cincinnati's East End. Primarily constructed of brick, the church's single spire was eventually fitted with a clock as the result of fund-raising efforts to that end in 1890. The church was variously damaged by numerous fires and floods, as in 1894 when the entire contents of the church went up in flames leaving only the walls themselves. In 1960, the attached school was closed due to the changing demographics of the neighborhood, but then from 1970-1979 changes in church management enabled a resurgence of St Rose's parish. The church's buildings have been restored numerous times and are to be found on the National Register of Historic Places. St. Rose of Lima remains standing to this day and has fortunately avoided the regrettable fates that befell many neighboring structures along Eastern Avenue.
