Description:
The red brick Water Tower was designed by the Cincinnati firm of Samuel Hannaford & Sons so that, as the Water Works' engineer recommended, it "should in no way detract from the beauty of the park landscape." The tower was used as a pressure tank to move water from the reservoir to the mains and hydrants in Walnut Hills. "Designed . . . as a castle keep, or donjon, the 172-foot tower sits on a massive ashlar base. The droplet to the left of the entrance designates the structure as an American Water Landmark. [There] are huge brackets below the brick-and-stone crenelated parapet. Bewinged gargoyles, cousins to the griffins adorn the elevator shaft, once crowned with a turret." Before 1912 park visitors could ride an elevator to the top of the tower to enjoy the panoramic view however, the tower is no longer open to the public.
