Description:

"The structure houses two buildings. The wing to the left contains the 223-seat Thompson Shelterhouse (1874, restored 1980), originally indeed a park shelterhouse and imaginatively remade into a small theater. That on the right holds the 629-seat Robert S. Marx Theater (1968). An atrium, the Marx Plaza (1980), connects the two theaters. Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer designed both of the Marx Theater and the Plaza." "Light and airy, the Playhouse lacks the traditional ornate embellishments . . . . that [one] associates with old theaters. Instead it offers a minimalist interior. . . . Steps and floors consist of poured concrete, originally unpainted; ductwork is exposed; actor's dressing room bulbs supplement natural, spot and neon lighting. White oak paneling in a 1987 remodeling covered the original tile wall near the entrance of Marx Theater." "The remodeling further lessened the high tech functionalism by removing the original fluorescent lighting. The picture window allows a fine view o
