Description:
|
"The pottery was a product of the late nineteenth-century desire to unite the beautiful with the useful and to encourage uniquely American art. "The half timbering with stucco infill, along with the fanlike pattern, may reflect Arts and Crafts influence. The buildings horizontal emphasis may indicate Japanese influence, an influence also on Rookwood ware. Circular chimneys announce the former kilns within. The factory, combining workrooms, decorating studios, and a salesroom, was designed in the spirit of William Morris's ideal workplace. Rookwood's wrought-iron gates came from the Hamilton County Courthouse destroyed during the 1840s riots. Feeding rooks, one beakless, crown the gateposts. Rooks reappear on stained-glass dormer windows. An I.T. Verdin clock stands before the entrance."
