Description:
|
"A designated national historic landmark constructed in 1906, the Elephant House was renovated and transformed into the Vanishing Giants exhibit in 2000. The Taj Mahal-like building is one of the most popular sites of the Zoo and home to the Asian elephant, giraffe and okapi. The building reflects Moghul or Moslem Indian architecture. Visible from the surrounding city, it sits on the zoo's highest point. Elzner & Anderson, the architects designed a sequence of stately homes: it is as if the Taj Mahal had pupped. The Elephant House with its picturesque domes conveys a sense of the exotic. By recalling the East it also recalls the homeland of the Asian elephants for whom the building was designed. Skylights and arched dome windows allow plenty of natural light."
