Description:
|
"[It was] built in 1930 to replace the Cincinnati Orphan Asylum that had been on the site since 1861. The stone gate posts of the old orphanage still stand on Auburn Avenue." "In 1861, children were moved out of the crowded isolation hospital on Elm Street to Auburn Avenue and a new, larger, 3-story brick building with 4-story towers on each end. The hall was decorated with the motto: 'When my father and mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me in.' The asylum received one hundred youngsters each year, and up to 150 or 200 in hard times." "The Cincinnati Orphan Asylum closed on February 18, 1930, and the old building was razed. The new Jacobethan style structure designed by Samuel Hannaford & Sons, was dedicated as the Children's Convalescent Home in January 1931. The Home, later the Children's Convalescent Hospital, was accredited as pediatric rehabilitation hospital in 1955 and became affiliated with Children's Hospital."
