Description:
|
The red brick German Gothic style building that is now Bethlehem Temple was originally, as the inscription above the main door records, Deutsche Protestantische St. Johannes Kirche, St. John German Protestant Church. St. John's was Cincinnati's first German congregation, organized in 1814 by Joseph Zaeslin who gathered both German Protestants and Catholics as the German Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Church. The group was "independent" or "free", that is not affiliated with any established denomination. Later, St. Johannes Kirche became "St. John's Unitarian. "In 1946, Over-the-Rhine began to lose its German population, St. John's became a Church of God. Now it belongs to the Apostolic Bethlehem Temple Church. Its façade is uncompromisingly Gothic: pointed windows, pinnacles, gables, machicolation, even corner buttresses. The tower once supported a wooden spire, removed after storm damage in 1916." In 1973, the church was entered on the National Register of Historic Places. ( 257-5
