Description:
|
Located in the northern Chinese province of Henan, the ancient city of Anyang dates back to the late Shang dynasty (ca. 1600 BC - ca. 1046 BC). Roughly 3.75km by 9.75km in area, the city is oval in shape and incorporates a temple complex, residential and aristocratic housing within a predominately unenclosed area. Archaeological findings suggest a cultural interest in death, as the Anyang style of bronze and Ta'o T'ieh designs highlight the idea of mortality coupled with ancestor worship. Yet what are arguably the most significant finds within the ancient city are the cemeteries that hold more than a dozen royal tombs. Each tomb includes a deep pit with a king at the center with a smaller pit below this coffin containing the bones of a dog. This central burial pit is surrounded by smaller pits containing the bodies of the king's men and horses, indicating an accumulation of burials long after the original central grave was completed.
