Beja is a city and a municipality in Portugal with a total area of 1,147.1 km² and a total population of 34,970 inhabitants in the municipality. Situated on a hill, commanding a strategic position over the vast plains of the Baixo Alentejo, Beja was already an important place in the antiquity. A castle on top of the hill can be seen from afar and dominates the town.
