Description:
|
Described in Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio p. 12. Entry from Catlin's 1848 catalog reads, "Snow-shoe Dance, Ojibbeway--danced at the first fall of snow, with snow shoes on the feet. Song of thanks to the Great Spirit." Probably sketched in 1835 and painted in the period 1835-1837 (Truettner, 1979, p. 273). See also plate 243 in Manners, Customs and Condition of the North American Indians. The lower left leg of the cnetral front figure is unfinished and transparent.
