Described in Vol. II, p. 41. Caption from Truettner catalog of Catlin's Indian Gallery. Entry from Catlin's 1848 catalog reads, "Cler-mont, __________; first Chief of the tribe; with his war-club in his hand, and his leggings fringed with scalp-locks taken from his enemies' heads. This man is the son of an old and celebrated chief of that name, who died a few years since." Originally painted in 1834 (Truettner, 1979, p. 152).
