Description:
|
Described in Vol. II, p. 126. Caption from Truettner catalog of Catlin's Indian Gallery. Entry from Catlin's 1848 catalog reads, "Ball-play of the Choctaws ball up--one party painted white; each has two sticks with a web at their ends, in which they catch the ball and throw it --they all have tails of horse-hair or quills attached to their girdles or belts. Each party has a limit or bye, beyond which it is their object to force the ball, which, if done, counts them one for game." Originally sketched in 1834 and painted in the period 1834-1835 (Truettner, 1979, p. 265). See also plate 23 in Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio.
