Description:
|
Described in Vol. II, pp. 121-122. Caption from Truettner catalog of Catlin's Indian Gallery. Entry from Catlin's 1848 catalog reads, "Tuch-ee, called 'Dutch;' first War-chief of the Cherokees; a fine-looking fellow, with a turbaned head. I travelled and hunted with this man some months, when he guided the regiment of dragoons to the Camanchee and Pawnee villages: he is a great warrior and a remarkable hunter." Originally painted in 1834 (Truettner, 1979, p. 222). The figure is wearing a necklace which appears to be made of either shells or dewclaws.
