Description:
ART WORKS Original painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) either at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825, or the Treaty of Fond du Lac, held at Fond du Lac (Minn.) in 1826. "I-au-be-ence" is a signatory at Prairie du Chien (Kappler, 1904, Vol. 2, p. 255) and "Jaubeance" is a signatory at the Treaty of Fond du Lac (Kappler, 1904, Vol. 2, p. 270). The Lewis original was copied by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (D.C.) in 1826 (Cosentino: 340). This portrait is listed as No. 30 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "I-AU-BEANE -- A Chippeway (King from Lewis, 1826)" (Viola, 1976, p. 143). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1965. A portrait of Jawbeance by Henry Inman (1801-1846) after King after Lewis, formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28278), is in a private collection.
