Description:
ART WORKS Original painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825. Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 210) indicates that the portrait was made at the Treaty of Fond du Lac, held at Fond du Lac (Minn.) in 1826. Lewis' 1850 catalog indicates the original was painted at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825. Sha-co-pe, The Sixth, is listed among the Sioux signatories of the Treaty of Prairie du Chien (1825) (Kappler, 1904, Vol. 2, p. 254). Chaucopee is also listed among the signatories of the Treaty of Fond du Lac (1826) (Kappler, 1904, Vol. 2, p. 270). Location of original unknown. The Lewis original was copied by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington, D.C. in 1827 (Cosentino: 341). This copy is listed as No. 72 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "JACK-O-PA, The Six - Chippeway Chief - (King from Lewis, 1827)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This copy is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. A portrait of The Six by Henry Inman (1801-1846), after King, formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28250), is in a private collection (Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology Inventory). George Catlin (1796-1872) painted The Six at Fort Union (N.D.) in 1832 (Truettner Gallery No. 182) (Truettner, 1979, pp. 92, 131, 133, 134, 195).
