Description:
ART WORKS Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 350) indicates that the original of this portrait was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Butte des Morts, held at Butte des Morts (Wis.) in 1827. The Spoon is not a signatory of that treaty. A portrait of The Spoon does not appear in The Aboriginal Portfolio, nor is one listed in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery. Even if one existed, there is no evidence that it was copied by King. Two portraits of The Spoon by Charles Bird King (1785-1862), painted in Washington (D.C.) in 1831 when a Menominee delegation, including The Spoon, visited the city. The first (Cosentino: 300) is listed as No. 82 n the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "A-MISK-QUEW, The Spoon -- Memomina War Chief (King)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The second (Cosentino: 301), formerly in the Redwood Library & Athenaeum, Newport, Rhode Island, was sold in 1970 to The Warner Collection, Gulf States Paper Corporation, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. One of sixteen studies owned by Mr. & Mrs. Bayard LeRoy King, Saunderstown, Rhode Island is identified by Viola (Viola, 1976, p. 130) as The Spoon (Amiskquew). Cosentino (Cosentino, 1977, 204) tentatively identifies the sketch as of Little Doctor (Cosentino: 637) . A copy of the King portrait by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28247), is in the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas.
