ART WORKS Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 342) suggests that the original of this portrait was painted by Bass Otis (1784-1861) in Washington (D.C.) in 1835. There is no listing for a portrait of Kanapima in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution. Cosentino does not list a painting of Kanapima by Charles Bird King (1785-1862). There are no entries for a portrait of Kanapimo by Henry Inman (1801-1846) in the inventory of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
