ART WORKS Plate 64 of The Aboriginal Port-Folio (1835-3838) indicates that the original was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Fond du Lac, held at Fond du Lac (Minn.) in 1826. Location of original unknown. Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 234) indicates the Lewis original was later copied by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington, D.C. Cosentino does not list a copy. A portrait with a similar title is listed as No. 142 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "TOMA-HAKE-TAKE, The warrior who speaks first (1826)" (Viola, 1976, p. 145). This painting was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A painting by Henry Inman (1801-1846) after Lewis, entitled "A Widow with "Husband". Chippewa. (Also known as: The Chippewa Widow.)", formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28230) is in the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS No.: AV1983.360.3).

PRINTS A lithograph based on the Lewis painting appears only in the Philadelphia, 1835-1838 edition of The Aboriginal Port-Folio. (Reese: 63) A lithograph based on the Lewis painting appears as Plate 16, entitled "Chippeway Widow", in McKenney, Thomas Loraine, 1785-1859. Sketches of a Tour to the Lakes, of the Character and Customs of the Chippeway Indians, and of Incidents Connected with the Treaty of Fond du Lac. Baltimore: F. Lucas, Jr., 1827. Lithographs based on the Inman copy appear in the following editions of McKenney, Thomas Loraine, 1785-1859, and Hall, James, 1793-1868.
