ART WORKS Three paintings of Angry Chief painted by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (D.C.) in 1822 are identified by Cosentino. The first (Cosentino: 438) is listed as No. 93 in the Catalogue in Rhees "IS-CA-TA-PE, Wicked Chief -- Great Plains (King)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The second (Cosentino: 439) is in the Danish National Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark. The third (Cosentino: 440) is in the White House Collection, Washington (D.C.). There is a King sketch tentatively identified as that of Angry Chief (Cosentino: 642). It is one of sixteen studies owned by Mr. & Mrs. Bayard LeRoy King, Saunderstown, Rhode Island (Cosentino, 1977, p. 205). Viola (Viola, 1976, p. 127) does not identify the subject. A copy of the first King portrait (Cosentino: 438) by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody No. 82-51-10\28222), is in the D. Harold Byrd, Jr. Collection (Viola, 1983, Cover).
