Description:
ART WORKS Original painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Butte des Morts, held at Butte des Morts (Wis.) in 1827. Plate 2 in The Aboriginal Port-Folio (1835-1838) indicates that the portrait was "Sketch'd at the Treaty at Green Bay __ 1827". Butte des Morts is located near Green Bay. Bear's Oil is not listed as a signatory of the Treaty of Butte des Morts. Ma-can-me-ta, Medicine Bear, is listed as a signatory of the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Pairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825 (Kappler, 1904, Vol. 2, p. 254). The portrait is not listed in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery. Location of original unknown. Horan (Horan, 1986, pp. 352) suggests that Charles Bird King (1785-1862) painted this individual when he was a member of a Menominee delegation to Washington, D.C. 1830-1831. This copy is listed as No. 96 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rees's 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "MAR-KO-ME-TA, Bear's Oil" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A copy of the King painting by Henry Inman (1801-1846) is in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody No. 82-51-10\28220).
Description:
PRINTS Lithographs based on the Lewis painting appear in all five editions of The Aboriginal Port-Folio. (Reese: 2) Lithographs based on the Inman copy of the King painting appear in the following editions of McKenney, Thomas Loraine, 1785-1859, and Hall, James, 1793-1868. The History of the Indian Tribes of North America: Philadelphia: F. W. Greenough, 1838-1844. Philadelphia: J. T. Bowen, 1848-1850. The lithographic portraits in The Aboriginal Port-Folio and The History of the Indian Tribes of North America are similar, suggesting that King copied the Lewis portrait.
