Description:
ART WORKS Original painted by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (D.C.) in 1826 (Cosentino: 319). According to Cosentino (Cosentino, 1977, p. 167) this portrait is listed as No. 107 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "HOLATO-MICCO, Blue King -- Seminole War Chief (King, 1826)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A portrait of Holate Micco (Blue King) by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody No. 82-51-10\28283), is in the D. Harold Byrd, Jr. Collection (Viola, 1983, Plate 25).
Description:
PRINTS Lithographic portraits of Chittee Yoholo appear in the following editions of McKenney, Thomas Loraine, 1785-1859, and Hall, James, 1793-1868. The History of the Indian Tribes of North America: Philadelphia: F. W. Greenough, 1838-1844. Philadelphia: J. T. Bowen, 1848-1850. Philadelphia: D. Rice & Co., 187_. The portraits in McKenney & Hall are very different from the Inman portrait. Although the faces may be those of the same individual, the man in the Inman portrait appears older; there are earrings in his slit ears; and his clothing and headdress are very different from those in the McKenney & Hall image.
