Description: 
ART WORKS Two portraits of Wabaunsee by Charles Bird King (1785-1862), painted in Washington (D.C.) 1835 are identified by Cosentino. The first (Cosentino: 464) is listed as No. 105 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "WAH-BAWN-SEE, Causer of Paleness -- Principal Chief of the Potawatomies (King, 1835)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The second (Cosentino: 465), formerly in the Redwood Library & Athenaeum, Newport, Rhode Island, was sold to Eugene B. Adkins in 1970. It was resold in 1973 and is in a private collection.
