ART WORKS Plate 70 of The Aboriginal Port-Folio (1835-1838) indicates that the original image was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Fond du Lac, held at Fond du Lac (Minn.) in 1826. It is not listed in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery. Location of original unknown. The Lewis original was copied by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington, D.C. ca. 1826 (Cosentino: 466). This copy is listed as No. 132 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "WA-EM-BOUSH-HAA -- Chippeway from Sandy Lake" (Viola, 1976, p. 145). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A portrait of "Wa-em-boeshka. Chippewa Chief." by Henry Inman (1801-1846) after James Otto Lewis, formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody No. 82-51-10\28207), is in a private collection (Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology Inventory). Presumably it is a copy of the King painting. Cosentino (Cosentino, 1977, p. 184) indicates that this painting is reversed.
