Description:
ART WORKS Plate 1 of The Aboriginal Port-Folio (1835-1838) indicates that the original image was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825. Wan-na-ta Yancton, or He that Charges on His Enemies was listed as a signatory of that treaty (Kappler, 1904, Vol. 2, p. 254). This portrait is listed as No. 1 in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery (Lewis, 1850, p. [7]. The location of this painting is unknown. Two copies of the Lewis original by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) painted in Washington (D.C.) in 1826 are identified by Cosentino. The first (Cosentino: 474) is listed as No. 119 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "WAA-NA-TAA -- Grand Chief of the Sioux (King, 1826)" (Viola, 1976, p. 145). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The second (Cosentino: 475), King's personal copy, was bequeathed to the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, Newport, Rhode Island. It was sold in 1970 to Gulf States Paper Corporation, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology Inventory includes a listing for a painting by Henry Inman (1801-1846) after King entitled "Sioux Chief". This painting, formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University(Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28288), is in a private collection (Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology Inventory). Peter Rindisbacher (1806-1834) painted a portrait of the Sioux War Chief Wuona-taa ca. 1822. The name, facial features, headdress, date, and location of the painting suggest that it is a portrait of Waa-na-taa. The painting is in the Rindisbacher Collection of National Archives of Canada (Accession No. 1988-250-35).
