Description:
ART WORKS A portrait by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) is listed as No. 53 in the catalog of his Indian Gallery (Lewis, 1850, p. 17). The location of this painting is unknown. Five portraits of Shaumonekusse by Charles Bird King (1785-1862), painted in Washington (D.C.), are identified by Cosentino. Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 296), the Parke-Bernet catalog (Parke-Bernet, 1970, p. xiv) and Ewers (Ewers, 1954, p. 471) date the works in 1821. Cosentino (Cosentino, 1977, pp. 168-169), Viola (Viola, 1976, p. 138) and the Smithsonian Institution Art Inventories date the works in 1822. The first (Cosentino: 331) is listed as No. 131 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "RANT-CHE-WAI-ME, MA-HA-KA, Female Flying Pigeon, Eagle of Delight [sic]" (Viola, 1976, p. 145). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The second (Cosentino: 332), formerly in the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, Newport, Rhode Island, was sold in 1970 to The Warner Collection, Gulf States Paper Corporation, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The third (Cosentino: 333) is in the Danish National Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark. The fourth (Cosentino: 334) is in the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, Tulsa, Oklahoma. The fifth (Cosentino: 335) is in the White House Collection, Washington, D.C. There is a King sketch of Eagle of Delight (Cosentino: 632). It is one of sixteen studies owned by Mr. & Mrs. Bayard LeRoy King, Saunderstown, Rhode Island (Cosentino, 1977, p. 203; Viola, 1976, p. 126). A copy of the 1822 King painting (Cosentino: 331) by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28197), is in the D. Harold Byrd, Jr. Collection (Viola, 1983, Plate 4).
