ART WORKS Plate in Aboriginal Port-Folio, 1835-1838, indicates the original was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at Detroit (Mich.) in 1823. Lewis' 1850 catalog indicates the original was painted at Detroit in 1827 (Lewis, 1850, p. [7]). Location of original unknown. Smithsonian Institution Art Inventories. Painting Inventory. 81880554 is identified as a portrait of Tenskwatawa by James Otto Lewis at the Library of Congress. A portrait of Open Door is listed as No. 99 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "TEUS-QUA-TA-WA, Open Door" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). Cosentino identifies this painting (Cosentino: 455) as one by Charles Bird King (1785-1862). He suggests that it was a copy after James Otto Lewis and indicates that it was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865 (Cosentino, 1977, p. 183). Another copy of the Lewis original by King, dated 1829, (Cosentino: 456) is in the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art (Cosentino, 1977, p. 183; Viola, 1976, pp. 58, 141). Smithsonian Institution Art Inventories. Painting Inventory. 61190050. is identified as a portrait of Terrskutanku by Charles Bird King at The Newberry Library, Chicago, Illinois. Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 156) indicates that King painted a portrait (not based on the Lewis original) of Open Door in Washington, D.C. which appears in editions of McKenney, Thomas Loraine, 1785-1859, and Hall, James, 1793-1868. The History of the Indian Tribes of North America. A portrait of Open Door by Henry Inman (1801-1846) after Charles Bird King, formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28191), is in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG Accession No.: NPG.82.71). George Catlin (1796-1872) painted Open Door in 1830 (Truettner Gallery No. 279) (Truettner, 1979, pp. 131, 134, 221).
