Description:
ART WORKS Three portraits of Push-ma-ta-ha painted by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (D.C.) in 1824 are identified by Cosentino. The first (Cosentino: 421) is listed as No. 22 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "GENERAL PUSH-MA-TA-HA -- Choctaw Chief" (Viola, 1976, p. 143). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The second (Cosentino: 422) is listed as No. 42 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "GENERAL PUSH-MA-TA-HA -- Choctaw Chief" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The third (Cosentino: 423), King's personal copy, was donated to the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, Newport, Rhode Island. It was sold in 1970 to the The Warner Collection, Gulf States Paper Corporation (Cosentino, 1977, p. 179; Viola, 1976, p. 140). A portrait of Push-ma-ta-ha by Henry Inman (1801-1846), based on the first or second King portraits (Cosentino: 421, 422), and formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28188) is in the D. Harold Byrd, Jr, Collection (Viola, 1983, Plate 28). Cosentino indicates that the Inman copy was based on the first King portrait (Cosentino: 421) (Cosentino, 1977, p. 179). Cosentino indicates that a portrait of Push-ma-ta-ha was also painted by Joseph Wood (Cosentino, 1977, p. 179).
