ART WORKS A portrait of Red Jacket (Seneca) by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) is listed as No. 55 in the catalog of his Indian Gallery (Lewis, 1850, p. 17). The location of this painting is unknown. Five portraits of Red Jacket by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) are identified bu Cosentino. The first (Cosentino: 430) was painted in Washington (D.C.) in 1828. This painting is listed as No. 98 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "RED JACKET -- SENECA CHIEF (King, 1828)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A second (Cosentino: 431) was painted in Washington (D.C.) in 1828. It is listed as No. 143 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "RED JACKET -- SENECA CHIEF (Viola, 1976, p. 145). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A third (Cosentino: 432), painted in Washington (D.C.) in 1828, was King's personal copy and was bequeathed to the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, Newport, Rhode Island. It was sold in 1970 to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York (Cosentino, 1977, p. 180; Viola, 1976, p. 141). A fourth (Cosentino: 433), painted in Washington (D.C.) in 1828, is in the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Cosentino, 1977, p. 180; Viola, 1976, p. 141).
